A Canadian Quaternary geologist who was born in Valmiera, Latvia. He was the President of the American Quaternary Association from 1980 to 1982 and he was awarded the Distinguished Career Award by the Geological Society of America in 1987.
He studied geology at the Institute of Palaeontology at the University of Latvia in Riga and lectured there as well.
He made many visits as an invited lecturer to Riga, and to Tallinn in Estonia.
His parents raised him in Valmiera, Latvia.
He and Ignacy Domeyko were both well known geologists.
