Writer and star of the popular country-western television show, Hee Haw.

He started on the radio, in the Mid-Day Merry-Go-Round with Roy Acuff, and co-created the Tennessee Barn Dance.

He intentionally kept Hee Haw simple and accessible to everybody, with humor usually coming from spoonerisms and sketches like That’s Bad/That’s Good.

Personal Life

He grew up with this family in Bulls Gap, Tennessee.

His Barn Dance radio show helped launch the careers of prominent country music stars, including Chet Atkins.

How did Archie Campbell die?

Campbell was an accomplished amateur golfer and built one of the earliest lighted golf courses in the United States. An avid painter, he also owned an art gallery and served on the school board in Knoxville, where he lived until he suffered a fatal heart attack in 1987. He is buried near the town of Powell, Tennessee.
