American performer who is best remembered for his recording of the song “That Old Black Magic” and for his appearances in such Broadway productions as Memphis Bound, Hello Dolly!, and Golden Boy.

He moved to New York City in 1935 to study law at Columbia University; however, he soon became a singing waiter, nightclub singer, and radio performer, instead.

He earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
