He was born in a farming town near Happy, Texas where his mother and her siblings performed in a gospel group.
The doctors discovered a terminal cancer and gave him three months to live. He planned to perform one last show in Seattle, but it never happened. He died on 14 February 1999 in Port Orchard, Washington.
