Remembered for forming The Stanley Brothers music duo with his singer and banjo-player brother, Ralph Stanley, this twentieth-century vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter was one of the founding fathers of the bluegrass genre. His best-known songs include “The Fields Have Turned Brown” and “White Dove.”

He and his brother and musical collaborator, Ralph, were born and raised in Dickenson County in southwestern Virginia.
