He was President of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity at the University of Minnesota.

He was awarded the Horatio Alger Jr. Award for Swedish-American of the Year in 1981.

His father Charles was a Swedish immigrant to the United States.

He and basketball coach Flip Saunders both attended the University of Minnesota.
