He was a TV newscaster for 50 years and the partner of Chet Huntley. He won ten Emmy Awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his career.

He got married to Ann Fischer on October 11, 1946 and after their divorce in 1968, he remarried Susan Adolph on June 10, 1972.

Brinkley died in 2003 at his home in Houston from complications of a fall suffered at his vacation home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, according to his son, John Brinkley.
