South African social rights activist well-known for his opposition to Apartheid. He later became the first black Archbishop of Cape Town. He also worked to end AIDS, poverty, racism, and homophobia throughout the world.

He married Nomalizo Leah Shenxane in 1955. The couple raised three daughters named Theresa, Mpho and Naomi and a son named Trevor.
