A twentieth-century British author, poet, academic, and critic associated with The Movement, he is best known for The Laughing Hyena (1953), The Year of the Monkey (1956), and other volumes of poetry. He was the 1980 recipient of the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry.
He was born into a relatively poor Warwickshire family and attended school on a scholarship.
Enright died Dec. 31 in London, his family said. The Guardian newspaper reported that the cause was cancer.
