Biography - A Short Wiki

Longtime shortstop for the Detroit Tigers during the Ty Cobb era who remained in baseball for a number of decades as a manager, owner, scout and executive.

Though standing at a diminutive 5’6″, he had an extraordinary talent for drawing walks and was an excellent contact hitter; as he put it, ‘it ain’t how big you are, it’s how good you are.’

He was the AL runs scored leader, with more than 100, in 1917, the fourth time he reached that mark; he was also the league’s top bases-on-balls man five times in six years.

He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, raised by his mother after his father’s untimely death.

He broke up Babe Ruth’s no-hitter game in 1917, a single to left field that was the only hit in the game.
