A twentieth-century author, journalist, and political figure, he was also the first public advocate of Latvian independence. He wrote for the prominent newspaper Dzimtenes Atbalss (Fatherland’s Echo) and published hundreds of political editorials.
He studied history and philosophy at the Shanyavskiy University in Moscow.
He was a leader of the Latvian National Democratic Party.
He was born in the Governorate of Livonia, Russian Empire, and he attended school in Riga, Latvia.
