Austrian experimental poet, author, translator, and recipient of the 1984 Grand Austrian State Prize. His well-known poems include “Sprechblasen,” “Idyllen,” and “Laut und Luise.”

He and fellow Austrian poet Friederike Mayrocker were life partners.

Ernst Jandl died on June 9, 2000, in Vienna. He was 74. The cause was a cardiac disorder, Franz-Leo Popp, a member of an Austrian authors’ organization, told journalists.
