An American writer of children’s fairy tales, he is best remembered for The Lady, or the Tiger? (1882) and The Hundreth Man (1886). His later works include The Captain’s Toll-Gate (1903) and The Lost Dryad (1912).

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following his marriage to Mary Ann Edwards Tuttle, he settled in Nutley, New Jersey.
