He was born in Bolton, Lancashire to Frank and Betsy Dibnah who were both employed at a bleach works.
Fred Dibnah, who has died of cancer aged 66, was an incorrigible English eccentric in an age in which it was thought they had all long since passed away. Dibnah died at Bolton Hospice, surrounded by his family, on 6 November 2004, after suffering from cancer for three years.
