British dystopian author best known for the novels Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm. His other works include an acclaimed autobiographical account of the Spanish Civil War and multiple political essays.
His birth name was Eric Arthur Blair. He and his two sisters were the children of Richard Walmesley Blair and Ida Mabel Blair. He was married to Eileen O’Shaughnessy until her death in 1945. He wed second wife Sonia Brownell in 1949. He fathered one son, Richard Horatio Orwell.
