Syrian Ba’ath politician who served as Prime Minister of Syria from 1970 to 1971 and President of Syria from 1971 to 2000. He seized power in 1970.
His brother, Rifaat al-Assad, tried to seize power from him and was exiled. His eldest son was killed in a car accident in 1994, and he had three other children.
On 10 June 2000, at the age of 69, Hafez al-Assad died of a heart attack while on the telephone with Lebanese prime minister Hoss.
