American scientist who served as the Secretary of Defense under President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981. He notably laid the groundwork for the Camp David accords and advocated a more lax position on the Soviet Union.
He received a PhD in physics from Columbia University before becoming a research scientist at the Radiation Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley.
