American modernist and romantic poet known for White Buildings, The Bridge, and other complex works. His shorter pieces include “The River,” “The Broken Tower,” and “Repose of Rivers.”

He had a sexual relationship with a woman named Peggy Cowley that inspired his poem “The Broken Tower.” The majority of his romantic relationships, however, were with men.
