American doctor who became known for inventing the Heimlich Maneuver.

He graduated from Cornell University in 1941 with his B.A., and earned an M.D. in 1943 from Weill Cornell Medical College.

In 1963, he created a chest drainage flutter valve that allows air and blood to drain from a collapsed lung.

Personal Life

His parents were Philip and Mary Heimlich. He married Jane Heimlich and he had two sons and two daughters.

He was the uncle of actor Anson Williams who played the role of Warren Weber on the television show Happy Days.

A statement from his family said Heimlich died at The Christ Hospital on December 17, 2016, after complications from a heart attack in his home in Hyde Park, Cincinnati, on December 12.
