Labour politician known for being a member of parliament from Birmingham Erdington. He served in the leadership role as the Shadow Minister for Policing and Shadow Minister for Pensions under a number of different Labour leaders.

He began his career as a trade unionist. During the 1970s he worked at the Brent Law Centre and was elected as chairman of his local branch of the Transport and General Workers’ Union. He was elected as a member of parliament in 2010.

In January 2021, he was appointed Shadow Paymaster General where he served until he died of natural causes on January 7, 2021.

He was born in Brent, England. He was based in Birmingham, England. He was married to British MP Harriet Harman. They had two sons, Harry and Joseph, and one daughter named Amy.
