American poet known for Views of Jeopardy, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated poetry collection. His other award-winning works include Monolithos, Refusing Heaven, and The Dance Most of All.

He had long-lasting romantic relationships with Linda Gregg and Laura Ulewicz. He ended up marrying Michiko Nogami, who inspired much of his poetry.
