German painter and Yale University art teacher. His best-known works include Sancta Simplicitas, Where?, and The Braid.

He trained in Paris at the renowned Ecole des Beaux Arts, studying with such teachers as Adolphe Yvon and Jean-Leon Gerome.

He painted an 1876 portrait of Yale president Theodore Dwight Woolsey.
