Nicknamed “The Duke,” he played a hero in action films and westerns and received an Academy Award for Best Actor for his starring role in True Grit in 1969. His voice, swagger, and acting style made him a major box office draw for thirty years.
His divorce with actress Esperanza Baur in 1954 resulted in her attempting to shoot him. He was married to Pilar Pallete from 1954 to 1973.
Death
Despite participating in a cancer vaccine study to combat the illness, Wayne succumbed to stomach cancer on June 11, 1979, at UCLA Medical Center.
According to his son Patrick and grandson Matthew Muñoz, a priest in the California Diocese of Orange, Wayne converted to Roman Catholicism shortly before his passing.
Burial and Grave
He was laid to rest in the Pacific View Memorial Park Cemetery in Corona del Mar, Newport Beach.
The actor asked for his tombstone to bear the inscription “Feo, Fuerte y Formal,” a Spanish phrase meaning “ugly, strong, and dignified.” Initially left unmarked for two decades, his grave has been adorned with the following quotation since 1999:
