He married Fontella Bass, as well as becoming her musical director, in 1965; he was married to his second wife Deborah until his death in 1999.
The trumpeter, band leader and composer Lester Bowie, died on Monday, November 8, 1999, at his home in Brooklyn. He was 58. The cause was liver cancer, said his brother Byron.
