His real name was Melvin Vernell III, but he was better known by his stage name, Lil Phat.

Vernell was at a hospital waiting for his daughter to be born when he was shot and killed. The murder occurred on June 7, 2012, outside of Northside Hospital in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
Witnesses had confirmed that at least two suspects were seen running from the shooting. The shooting occurred at 6:40 p.m.
Three men were convicted of the murder in August 2014. Related charges concerning a fourth defendant were later dropped.
