Her boyfriend Bertrand Cantat was a lead singer with the French rock band Noir Désir and was convicted of murder after her death.

Marie Trintignant was repeatedly beaten on the head during an argument with Cantat in a hotel room in Lithuania in 2003, and later died of severe brain damage in a Paris hospital.
