Guyanese poet who is widely considered one of the most significant Caribbean writers. His best-known works include Poems of Affinity and Poems of Resistance from British Guiana.
He grew up with six siblings in Georgetown, Guyana. He married Phyllis Howard in 1953 and subsequently fathered four children.
Martin Carter died at his home in Manhattan. He was 57. The cause of death was a ruptured aortic aneurysm, said Dr. Jules Hirsch of the Rockefeller University Hospital.
