President of the Republic of Congo from 1965 to 1997 who was installed by the US. While in power he established a single-party state in which all power was in his hands.
He was married twice, and had fourteen children between the two marriages.
From 23 May 1997 he lived mostly in Rabat, Morocco. He died there on 7 September 1997 from prostate cancer aged 66. He is buried in an above ground mausoleum at Rabat-Sale-Zemmour-Zaer, in the Christian cemetery known as Cimetière Européen.
