His son Norman became an American Olympic medalist in equestrian and his other son Justin became a composer. His godfather was Pietro Yon, longtime organist of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.
He was 95. He died of natural causes, according to his son Justin Dello Joio, who also is a composer. Much of Norman Dello Joio’s repertoire was inspired by sacred scripture, religious poetry and the lives of Christian saints.
