Politician and Democrat who was the Governor of Minnesota from 1955 to 1961. He served as the agriculture secretary under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, promoting food assistance to the poor.
He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, his family of Swedish and Norwegian background.
Later, Freeman headed two consulting businesses and practiced law in Washington, DC. Freeman died from complications of Alzheimer’s disease on February 20, 2003, in Minneapolis.
