Head of the Catholic Church from 1922 until his death in 1939 who fostered and concluded a record number of concordats during his reign.

He obtained doctorates in philosophy, canon law, and theology at the Gregorian University in Rome.

He helped bring about the Lateran Treaty, which resolved hostility between the Church and the Italian government.

Pope Pius XI died on Feb. 10, 1939, the day before he was to address a meeting of all Italian bishops. The Paris Match report said that Mussolini had had information that the Pope intended to criticize the Fascist regime in his speech and had arranged his assassination through an injection administered by Dr. Francesco Saverio Petacc.
