Former United States Representative for the 4th congressional district of Texas and chairman of the United States’ House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. At the age of 91, he became the oldest person to ever serve in the House of Representatives, the oldest person ever elected to a House term, and the oldest House member ever to cast a vote.

He began his political career in January 1981 as a congressman.

In 2004, he switched to the Republican Party after being a member of the Democratic Party for over 50 years.

Personal Life

He married his wife, Mary Ellen Murphy, on November 14, 1944. Together they had three sons.

In 2013, both he and former Michigan Congressman John Dingell, were the last two World War II veterans to serve in Congress.
