He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his performance in the 1980 film The Idolmaker. He also appeared in Dog Soldiers, Body Rock, and Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills. 

He made his film debut in 1974’s The Lords of Flatbush.

He played Sonny Steelgrave in the TV series Wiseguy.

He was raised by his mother, Cecilia, after his father abandoned her and five-year-old Ray.

He was inspired to pursue acting after seeing Jack Lemmon’s performance in the 1962 film Days of Wine and Roses.
