Robert Young is best known for his leading roles in the series Father Knows Best (as the father) and Marcus Welby, M.D. (as physician Marcus Welby).

He married Betty Henderson in 1933 and the couple had 4 children together.

Contrary to the cheerful characters he played on screen, Young battled both depression and alcoholism. After leaving Father Knows Best, the actor had a real low point and sought professional help and joined Alcoholics Anonymous.

How did Robert Young die?

The actor almost died in 1991, at age 83. He admitted to being drunk when he first asked his wife to enter into a suicide pact with him. He then tried to end his life by running a hose from his car’s exhaust pipe to the interior of his car. Luckily the car battery was dead and the attempt failed.

Instead Young had reached the respectable age of 91 when he died of respiratory failure at his Westlake Village, California, home on July 21, 1998.

Burial

Young is buried at Forest Lawn in Glendale, California. The epitaph on his grave reads “DEVOTED HUSBAND. FATHER. GRANDFATHER”
