Co-founder of the American Denishawn School of Dance; pioneered modern dance, bringing eastern ideas to the art. She taught many notables, including Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Lillian Powell, Evan-Burrows Fontaine, and Charles Weidman.
Her parents were living in Newark, New Jersey, on a small farm when she was born; her mother was her first and possibly strictest dance teacher, training her in the techniques of François Delsarte.
