Canadian curler nicknamed “Schmirler the Curler” who three World Curling Championships during her hugely successful career. She captained the Canadian national team to an Olympic gold medal in 1998, the first year that women’s curling was recognized by the Winter Olympics, and later became a respected commentator for CBC Sports.
She was survived by her husband, Shannon, and two daughters, Sara and Jenna.
Sandra Schmirler died Thursday, March 2, 2000, in Regina, Saskatchewan. She was 36. She died of cancer, the Canadian Curling Association said.
