American author and poet who published more than forty books over the course of his career, including travelogues and numerous works on Haitian art and literature. One of his best-known works is Haiti: The Black Republic.

He was born in a well-to-do Manhattan family and went on to study at Yale University.

He and his sister, Nancy, grew up in a wealthy Manhattan family.
