He grew up in Los Angeles, California.

Maiman, a physicist who on May 16, 1960, demonstrated the world’s first laser, a device small enough to fit in his hand, died on May 5 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was 79. The cause was systemic mastocytosis, a rare genetic disorder, his wife, Kathleen, said.
