Humanitarian and philanthropist known as one of Pakistan’s most respected figures. He founded the Edhi Foundation, which runs the world’s largest volunteer ambulance network. It also runs homeless shelters, animal shelters and orphanages.
When he was 11, his mother became paralyzed and suffered mental illness. He devoted himself to caring for her.
He was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He received awards including the Gandhi Peace Award.
Personal Life
His wife was Bilquis Bano Edhi. They had two daughters and two sons. After his death, his son Faisal Edhi took over as head of the Edhi Foundation.
After his death, then-Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif said “We have lost a great servant of humanity. He was the real manifestation of love for those who were socially vulnerable, impoverished, helpless, and poor.”

Edhi died on 8 July 2016 at the age of 88 due to kidney failure after having been placed on a ventilator. One of his last wishes was that his organs be donated for the use of the needy but due to his poor health, only his corneas were suitable for later use in the donation.
