Remembered for his decades-long collaboration with fellow English comedian Eric Morecambe, he was associated with several popular comedy programs on the ATV, BBC, and ITV networks. He and Morecambe were particularly adored among British audiences for their Christmas comedy specials.

He and his four siblings grew up in Leeds, England. His more than four-decade marriage to dancer Doreen Blythe produced no children.

Ernie Wise died from heart failure and a chest infection at the Nuffield Hospital, Wexham, near Slough, on the morning of 21 March 1999.
