Most well known for his role as Scott Carey in the cult classic science fiction feature The Incredible Shrinking Man, he is also remembered for his early work with the New York City Opera and The Robert Shaw Chorale.

He and his brother were raised in New York City by a an Irish mother and a Scottish father. His Scottish cousin Mary Garden became a prominent opera singer.
