She was Miss North Carolina in 1963 and became a beloved humorist and storyteller. At 6 foot 2 inches, she is the tallest contestant ever to participate in the Miss America pageant.

Her first husband was Walter Bailey Bowline III whom she married in 1965 while they were both students at Auburn, but they divorced in the early 1970s. She married Jerry Robertson in 1974.
