Known best for his starring role in the 1970 BBC series The Six Wives of Henry VIII, this Australian-born stage and screen actor also appeared as Heathcliff in the 1962 BBC version of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights.

He was raised in Warnertown, South Australia. His marriage to Czechoslovakian-born actress Jeanette Sterke resulted in a son named Paul and an actress daughter named Helena.

A statement from his family said Michell had died peacefully at his home in Hampstead, north London, aged 88.
