An Austrian/Swiss film actress who has starred in several movies including Gervaise, The Brothers Karamazov, and has even starred in American films such as the 1978 adaptation of Superman and The Hanging Tree. In 1956, she was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at Venice Film Festival for her performance in Gervaise.

Her mother was Margarethe Nordberg, an actress who taught at an acting school, and her father was Hermann Ferdinand Schell, a swiss poet and novelist.

Maria Schell, an Austrian actress who achieved international fame in Hollywood and became a major star of German-language films, died on Tuesday at her home in Preitenegg, Austria. She was 79.
