Republican politician who was the 99th Mayor of New York for three terms from 1934 to 1945. He also served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York’s 20th district 1923 to 1933.

He went to Budapest after joining the State Department.

Despite being from the opposite party he supported FDR’s New Deal and he later had an airport named after him.

Personal Life

He married twice, and his first marriage to Thea Almerigotti ended in November 1921 due to her death of tuberculosis.

He was supported by Franklin D. Roosevelt because he reciprocated support to his New Deal initiatives.

How did Fiorello La Guardia die?

After leaving the mayoralty in 1945, La Guardia became director-general of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, through which he hoped to alleviate suffering in the post-war world. Tragically, he never got that chance because he died from pancreatic cancer in 1947.
