Rock and blues guitarist who played alongside his two years younger brother Edgar Winter.

The brothers had albinism, a genetic condition characterized by a lack of pigment in the hair and skin. In addition, both brothers were legally blind, a common side effect of the condition.

In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him #63 on their “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list.

Johnny engaged in a brief romance with fellow artist Janis Joplin. Their affair culminated in a concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden, where they sang and performed together.

He was married to Susie Winter from 1992 until he died in 2014.

Death

Winter died on July 16, 2014, near Zürich, Switzerland, and was professionally active until the time of his death.

He was discovered lifeless in his hotel room just 48 hours following his final performance at the Cahors Blues Festival in France.

The official cause of Winter’s demise was not disclosed. However, according to his guitarist friend and record producer Paul Nelson, Winter succumbed to a combination of emphysema and pneumonia.
