American musical theater performer who starred as Tony in the original Broadway production of West Side Story. He also appeared in the first production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company.

He graduated from Hollywood High School in Los Angeles. He made his Broadway debut in Tickets, Please!

His sister, Anita Ellis, had a career as a singer. He died of AIDS at the age of sixty.
