His film appearances included roles in The Birds (1963) and Brighty of the Grand Canyon (1967), where he portrayed President Theodore Roosevelt. He was married twice; his first marriage to Virginia Hanscom Swenson resulted in four sons. His second marriage to actress Joan Tompkins lasted until his death.
